I proudly admit that I'm a beadaholic :-) I enjoy buying necklaces at thrift stores, yard sales or Wal-Mart to disassemble them to use the beads in my beaded creations. This is a step by step recycling guide for harvesting beads from necklaces.
Step
1I find beautiful inexpensive beads by recycling necklaces from thrift shops or places like Wal-Mart.
For example, the necklace pictured was a clearance item priced down from $10 to only $3. I snapped up the deal because the beads would compliment a blue and green glass pendant for a summer necklace which I'll share in a later article with you.
Step
2
Find the beginning knot of your necklace or cut off one part of your clasp while holding your necklace to prevent your beads from falling off.
Hint if you have a pair of hemostat clamps use them or a clothespin to hold your beads in place while working with your necklace.
Step
3
Use a nail or pair of tweezers to untie any decorative knots in your necklace, by gently pushing the tip into the middle of the knot. At this point, you can use the tweezers to pull the knot loose. See the picture below.
Step
4
Save the cord from your necklace for other projects if you wish. I plan on using the brown cord for a wind-chime project using an old fork and tiny bells. :-) Place your beads in a small Ziploc bag for safe keeping.
