DIY Dangle Hoop Earrings

Dangle hoop earrings are both attractive and surprisingly simple to make. Even a beginning jewelry maker can have almost instant success creating beautiful dangle hoop earrings in only a matter of minutes. Learn how to make dangle hoop earrings and see the lovely earrings that you can make with only a few materials and necessary tools. Once you see what you can make you may never buy ready-made earrings again.

Tools

· two earring hoops

· two earring wires

· Beads (whatever color and size desired)

· two head pins

· Chain nose pliers

· Round nose pliers

· Wire cutters

A. Place several beads onto one head pin to create a "dangle" of beads. Typically, a larger bead would be placed onto the head pin first and then you would follow the larger bead with several smaller beads. Experiment until you have a dangle of beads that you like.

B. Place the chain nose pliers immediately above the last bead on the head pin and bend the head pin to approximately an 80 degree angle.

C. Position the round nose pliers as close to the bend as possible and wrap the tail of the head pin around the round nose of the pliers to create a loop.

D. Hold the loop with the chain nose pliers and pull the tail of the head pin around the base of the loop to create a wrapped wire under the loop. Wrap the head pin tail several times tightly.

E. Clip any excess head pin wire after wrapping.

F. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 to create another identical head pin dangle.

G. Slide two beads onto one earring hoop.

H. Slide a head pin dangle onto the earring hoop.

I. Slide two more beads onto the earring hoop.

J. Attach the eye of the earring hoop onto the loop of an earring wire to finish one earring.

K. Repeat Steps 7 through 10 to make a second identical earring.

Hoop earrings do it youself

Hoop earrings are jewelry staples. They turn the right outfit into an extraordinary look. With a few simple tools, you can make your own hoop earrings– with or without beads– and create the exact match for your favorite outfit.

· wire

· choice of beads (optional)

· round nose pliers

· chain nose pliers

· flat nose pliers

· side cutters

· raw hide mallet, plastic mallet or ball pein hammer

· anvil or block

· cup burr or needle file

· ruler

A. Gather your tools and select the type of metal wire you would like to use for your hoop earrings. 20 or 21 gauge wire is generally the most comfortable to wear.

B. Using your round nose pliers, make an eye at one end of your spool of wire. To avoid scraps and conserve precious metal wire, do not cut the wire from your spool until you get to step five (5).

C. The length of wire you use will depend on the size hoop you would like to create. Select a dowel the size of the hoop you want to make. There are many commercial dowels available to make jewelry. Inexpensive alternatives can be found throughout your house. Children’s blocks, magic markers, pens, pencils, broom or mop handles and tree limbs are all examples of items that can be used as a dowel.

D. Wrap the wire around your chosen dowel. Note that in this case we have used an orange block that we raided from our kids’ block box. (Shhh. please do not tell the kids that we are playing with their toys. Again.)

E. Be sure the wire is wrapped completely around the dowel with an overlap of about 1/2 inch. Cut the wire.

F. File the end until it is very, very smooth with a cup burr or needle file.

G. Feed on the beads, if any, onto the ear wire in your chosen pattern. (Here we fed on only one glass bead.) Using your needle or flat nose pliers, bend the end to create a latch for the earring.

H. Place the earring carefully on a steel bench block or anvil. Hit the earring gently with a raw hide or plastic hammer to harden the metal and prevent the earring from bending when it is worn. Reshape the hoop as you work, if needed.

I. Repeat to make the earring mate.
